The procession re-enacts the triumphant acclamation given to Caterina Corsaro, a Venetian Noblewoman who married Giacomo Lusinagano, king of Cyprus . When her husband died, she returned to Venice in 1489, and gave the island of Cyprus to the Serenissima Republic as a gift. The Queen is surrounded by a group of maids of honour, and a colourful delegation from Cyprus wearing the classic turban, she is seated on a sedan chair carried by eight Negro slaves. Following the Queen, the Doge with pages, the Senators of the Serenissima, the Ambassadors of the East in their sumptuous robes, soldiers and drummers…. |
