Pisa: The heroine of the bells |
The Tuscan procession tells the story of the heroine Kinzica de’Sismondi who in 1604 saved the city from an unexpected night attack by the Saracens. She woke up the soldiers by ringing the Church bells. The procession represents Pisa during the epoch of her maximum splendour (before the defeat by the Genoese in 1684) ;the heroine is on horseback flanked by maids of honour, and accompanied by the most important personages of the maritime city, the Podestà (the highest city authority), the College of the Elders, the Captain of the Population, the Admiral of the fleet, two Consuls of the Sea, and a parade of armed men, musicians and sailors…. |
