The procession of Amalfi re-enacts the wedding of the Duke Giovanni II with the “durrissima and Patricissa” Maria, a noble-woman of Norman origins. The procession was conceived by the scenographer Roberto Scielzo, who also designed the costumes, it represents the society of Amalfi at the peak of its period of greatest splendour.

The bridal couple are escorted on two sides by knights and maids of honour, by Duke Sergio III, surrounded by pages, the Consul of the Sea, two Judges, the standard bearers with the insignia of the Duchy , and as a testimony of the extensive diplomatic and commercial relations Amalfi held with the whole Mediterranean basin, the Knights of S.Giovanni of Jerusalem and the Byzantine and Arabian Ambassadors.
