Genova: The Sacred Basin

The Ligurean procession represents the consular period of the City; the main episode of the procession is the triumph of the soldier of fortune Guglielmo Embriaco, called “testa di maglio” (head of chain-mail) in the first crusade (1099) when he lead the Genoese in the taking of Jerusalem. On his return home the General donated to the City the sacred ashes of S.Giovanni Battista and the Sacred Basin used by Jesus for the washing of the feet at the Last Supper.

Also represented is Caffaro di Caschifellone, writer and historian who recorded in his works the exploits of the Republic of Genoa.

Followed by the town authorities and the various social classes, but as it mainly a military parade, there is a numerous participation of armed men in heavy armour, pike men, archers and soldiers on horseback.
