The festivities begin with a noisy
procession of folklore groups, a half hour of
music and happiness that reaches its peak with
the superb firework display at midnight and then
everyone goes into the town square for music,
singing and dancing until dawn. The next day the
folk groups repeat their performance in the square,
with satirical verses and ancient tarantellas
that wish a Happy New Year to tourists and residents
alike…

Celebrations go on until the 6th of January:
with the enchanting procession of shepherds in
the morning and the exhibition of folklore groups
in the afternoon, the festival is finally brought
to a close in the evening with the “descent
of the star” …
The next important appointment is Shrove Tuesday
with the Grand Carnival of Amalfi. Happy go lucky
and without to much effort as the spirit of Carnival
should be, a procession of people in fancy dress
dance by, with the small carnival floats, hand
decorated by the imagination of the young people
of Amalfi….
After this revelry comes Lent, the period of
preparation for Easter, the highest expression
of Christianity and also of the traditions of
Amalfi…
The celebrations open with the Stations of the
Cross on Maunday Thursday, with a sad procession
of white hooded figures “I battenti”
who leaving from Atrani pass through the roads
of the town, representing the Passion of Christ… |
