Halfway through the year
1000, Robert the Guiscardo invaded Southern Italy. The Duchy of
Amalfi reluctantly had to accept the protector-ship but in the year
’96 they attempted a rebellion. A complete disaster, annihilated,
the rebels were stripped of all their privileges, lost their castles
and a large part of the fleet and the Duke Marino Sebaste was removed
from office…
In the meantime a league headed by the Pope moved against Guiscardo,
the Piseans who where great enemies of Amalfi also took part. In
June ‘135 they landed in force along the coast and with sword
and fire destroyed the towns, two years later they returned to complete
the opera, destroying al the fortifications…
Manfred succeeded Guiscardo and successfully fought the alliance,
and restored the Norman dominion; but the Pope did not give up and
this time aided by the Angevins attacked again and won: the start
of French domination…
